List of UK Importers

Key UK companies identified as wood pellet, biomass fuel and timber importers with company profiles and product details

The United Kingdom is the largest importer of wood pellets in Europe and one of the biggest globally, with annual import volumes exceeding 8 million tonnes. The UK's wood pellet demand is driven primarily by the conversion of large coal-fired power stations to biomass, most notably the Drax Power Station in North Yorkshire which alone consumes approximately 7 million tonnes of wood pellets per year. The UK government's Renewable Obligation Certificate (ROC) scheme and the Renewables Obligation have been instrumental in incentivising this transition, making biomass a central pillar of the country's renewable energy strategy.

The companies listed below represent the diverse landscape of the UK wood pellet and biomass fuel import sector. This includes major utility companies such as Drax and E.ON, specialist biomass fuel distributors, timber importers, wood fuel co-operatives, and companies involved in related sectors such as BBQ equipment manufacturing that import wood pellets and charcoal. The directory covers the full spectrum from utility-scale power generation importers through to regional domestic fuel suppliers operating across England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland.

🔥 UK Biomass Energy Market

The United Kingdom is the world's largest importer of industrial wood pellets, with imports exceeding 8 million tonnes annually. The majority of these imports originate from the southern United States, where fast-growing pine forests provide a sustainable feedstock, as well as from Canada, Latvia, Estonia and Portugal. The UK's biomass demand is overwhelmingly driven by utility-scale electricity generation, with Drax Power Station alone consuming approximately 7 million tonnes per year following its conversion from coal to biomass fuel.

🌳 Key Supply Chain Hubs

The UK's wood pellet import infrastructure is centred around major deep-water ports including the Port of Immingham on the Humber estuary, which handles the bulk of Drax's pellet imports, the Port of Liverpool, the Port of Tyne and the Port of Bristol. Dedicated biomass storage domes and handling facilities have been constructed at these ports, with companies like WOOD ENERGY HANDLING LTD providing specialist logistics services. London serves as the trading hub for companies like PELTRADE LTD, while Scotland hosts several wood fuel co-operatives and sustainable forestry operations.

📈 Regulatory Framework

The UK wood pellet market operates under strict sustainability criteria. The Biomass Suppliers List (BSL) is a government-authorised register of wood fuel suppliers who demonstrate compliance with the UK's sustainability requirements. ENplus certification ensures pellet quality standards. The UK's departure from the EU has maintained the Renewables Obligation (RO) and Contracts for Difference (CfD) schemes, which continue to provide financial incentives for biomass electricity generation, ensuring ongoing demand for imported wood pellets in the UK energy mix.
