What is Barite?
Barite is a mineral composed of barium sulfate ($BaSO_4$), characterized by its exceptionally high density and crystalline structure.
It is primarily used as a weighting agent in oil and natural gas drilling fluids. By increasing the viscosity of the drilling mud, it helps stabilize the borehole and prevent blowouts. Beyond drilling:
- White pigment in paint, paper, and rubber industries,
- Radiation shielding in medicine (absorption of X-rays and Gamma rays),
- Aggregate for heavy concrete in nuclear power facilities.
