FISH MEAL | IMPORTERS | NORWAY

Norwegian Fishmeal and Fish Flour Importers

Norway imported about 228,000 metric tons of fish meal/flour (HS 230120) in 2023 (valued at ~$478.7M) . The bulk came from Iceland (34.4%) and Denmark (31.6%) , with smaller shares from the Faroe Islands, Uruguay, Peru, etc. Major Norwegian buyers include large aquafeed producers and agricultural co-ops, as outlined below (with websites and business type). Typical sources for these companies are South American producers (Peru/Chile) and North Atlantic suppliers (Iceland, Denmark, Faroe).

  • Skretting AS (www.skretting.com) – Global aquafeed producer headquartered in Stavanger . Skretting is Norway’s largest fish-feed company (part of Nutreco), supplying salmon and trout feeds. It sources imported fishmeal (e.g. Peruvian anchovy meal and herring meal from Iceland/Denmark) to formulate its diets. In 2023 Norway’s total imports were ~228K t , so Skretting likely handles a large share of this volume (supported by Norway’s reliance on imported feed ingredients ). (Skretting’s Stavanger mill was the first in Norway to be BAP-certified, underscoring its key role .)

  • BioMar Group (BioMar Norway) (www.biomar.com) – Aquaculture feed manufacturer with Norwegian plants in Myre and Karmøy . BioMar (owned by Denmark’s Schouw & Co.) produces salmon/trout feeds. Like Skretting, BioMar imports significant quantities of fishmeal (notably from Peru, Iceland/Denmark and Uruguay). For example, in 2023 Iceland and Denmark together supplied ~66% of Norway’s fishmeal imports , reflecting likely BioMar sourcing. (BioMar Norway’s ASC-certified facilities produce feeds for salmon farming )

  • Cargill Aqua Nutrition (EWOS) (www.cargill.com) – Aquafeed producer (formerly EWOS) under Cargill’s Norwegian division  Cargill Norway makes commercial salmon and trout feeds in Stavanger and elsewhere. Its products include fishmeal from global suppliers (e.g. Peruvian and Baltic sources). Cargill’s feed diets are formulated with natural marine and terrestrial ingredients so imported fishmeal (caught for reduction in South America and Europe) is a key input. (Cargill/EWOS is one of the “four largest Norwegian feed companies” mentioned in trade reports .)

  • Felleskjøpet Agri SA (www.felleskjopet.no) – Agricultural cooperative and feed distributor. Norway’s largest farm co-op (with ~97 retail outlets and 15 feed mills) produces compound feeds for poultry, swine, cattle, horses and even pet food . Until recently fishmeal was mainly banned from livestock feed, but recent exemptions allow limited use in poultry/pig feeds. Felleskjøpet likely imports premium fish meals (e.g. marine proteins or herring meal) for specialty feeds (pets, poultry) from Iceland/Denmark or Peru. It controls ~60% of Norway’s feed market , so it may account for several thousand tons of imports annually (sources: traded data and market reports ).

  • Firmenich Bjørge Biomarin AS (www.firmenich.com) – Seafood ingredients processor. Based in Ellingsøy, Norway, this Firmenich subsidiary turns fish co-products into natural oils and protein powders . It processes and markets fish hydrolysates and concentrates. Biomarin likely imports raw fishmeals (such as mixed pelagic meal or herring meal) or trimmings from Norway’s neighbors for further processing. (For example, herring/mackerel meals from the Faroe Islands or Denmark could be shipped to Norway). Specific trade volumes are not public, but Biomarin’s appearance in customs records shows it makes occasional small imports of meal/flour.

Each of the above importers sources fishmeal/flour from major producing countries. In 2023 Iceland and Denmark together supplied over two-thirds of Norway’s fishmeal . Peru and Chile (the world’s top producers) also account for significant shipments. For context, Norway’s pelagic processing firms (e.g. Pelagia, PrimaProtein) produce domestic fishmeal, but the feed industry still relies on imported marine proteins for nutrition and diversity.
